There's a production of Rigoletto coming up at the Theatre Royal, Brighton.

OK, can anyone tell me what the Magnificent Golden Eagle is going to be doing?

The footnote on the ad, by the way, says "Ellen Kent and Opera International reserve the right to change any member of cast at any time."

The eagle is there to look impressive, and to carry off hairpieces worn by audience members in an amusing manner.

This looks suspiciously like the production they had in Edinburgh a while back which ended up recruiting a couple of dancers from one of the pubs in the delightfully named "pubic triangle" when they'd trouble getting work permits for all the Ukrainian strippers they'd hoped to bring over.

The Glasgow (http://living.scotsman.com/music.cfm?id=579472006) incarnation last month doesn't seem to have been any better.

A real eagle?

(I'd be more impressed with a Griffon Vulture myself - or a Condor...)

Or perhaps impress the hoi poloi enough that they'll go to the theatre rather than the the cinema?

Or to eat the hoi polloi if they step out of line (by applauding at scene changes etc).
