Is it just me, or is this Doctor completely disconnected from the previous one? It doesn't feel as if there's any continuity.

Reserving judgement on tonight's episode: have a feeling that next week's is going to be No Fun.

In other news, did they just call Rose a dog?

I don't consider him any more disconnected from Eccleston than, say, Baker (T) was from Pertwee, or McCoy from Baker (C). If anything, the recurring presence of Rose's parents and Mickey is more of a link than that offered by UNIT or the companions du jour.

Rose is, I suspect, the only companion ever to have lasted through one entire incarnation and into another.

The links you're talking about, though, are plot not personality. Mind you, I don't really remember other transitions in any detail. It just seems as though, if I didn't know better, I'd assume he was a completely separate person.

Ah, but in so many ways, he is a separate person. On those rare occasions where incarnations have crossed paths, it's made quite clear that they consider themselves so, to the point of actual dislike (especially Hartnell for Pertwee and Troughton, whom he described in The Three Doctors as "a dandy and a clown" IIRC). Colin Baker took it even further, initially acting as though he'd gone to the Dark Side, and one potential future incarnation - the Valeyard in Trial of a Timelord - is 100% evil.

Television is bad for you. Rots what's left of the brain. I thoroughly recommend something much more stimulating such as... er... clearing out the garage.

eek!

So you've finished hibernating, then? Or is there broadband in the garage now?

Wasn't hibernating, just resting my eyelids.
We're moving house. O joy. We found a strange bag of women's clothing in the depths of the garage; no idea who they belong to. No sign of the severed limb yet.
