The thing is with Sutcliff is that her m/m relationships are utterly convincing portrayals of non-sexual love -- the love between two friends. Like those MagicEye pictures, though, it's sometimes difficult not to see the ... possibilities ... once they've been pointed out.
I suspect the slashiest bit in Outcast is one of the loose ends -- the 'honest-faced' man who really, really wants to buy Beric in the slave market, but hasn't enough money, and apologises directly to Beric. There's a whole other novel waiting to be told there.
Though I do wonder if she had him renamed 'Hyacinthus' deliberately ...
