Retiring

It really does feel as though I've retired from the rat-race: mellow autumn days, life at my own pace ...

Today I earnt money for the first time since I left London. £10 for chatting to someone for an hour about Excel. She's starting work on Monday after 14 months' maternity break, and panicking that she's forgotten everything she knew. I seem to've helped, which is nice.

Yesterday I took the bus up to Pyecombe and wandered along the top of the Downs, along the ancient ridgeway: then down a steep, earthwork-lined hollow track -- the sort that lines up with proper roads, and thus is likely pretty old -- to another road, Underhill Road, that's been a track for thousands of years. I'm not sure I ever lost the distant sound of traffic: but the taste of blackberries, the creak of crickets, the vivid green of grass on the north slope, all seemed timeless.

London tonight: people, beer, music. Just so I don't forget how.

[livejournal.com profile] tamaranth retiring? Surely not? Ohhhhh, the other sort of retiring...

Sounds lovely, apart from the talking about Excel.

Sounds brilliant. I love walking in the country, just don't get the chances to do it that I used to have.

Sounds wonderful. I should do that more. Though not much built around here over 100 years old. Native peoples lived very lightly on the land.
