Kettle's Yard lunchtime concert, 16th Jan '09: The Martucci Ensemble (2 x violin, 2 x viola, 2 x cello).
R. Strauss: - Sextet from 'Capriccio'
j. Brahms: - Sextet #2 in G maj.

The Strauss didn't do much for me except confirm my prejudices about his chamber music: mostly rather saccharine though the 2nd movement had some interesting discords and more sense of conversation.

The Brahms was amazing, passionate like Beethoven and precise like Vivaldi (sometimes simultaneously). 2nd movement a solemn joyous dance.

Another capacity crowd with people being turned away: I bashed my head on Art, craning to see the violinists. A Buddha atop a pedestal seemed as intent on the performance as the ladies sitting in front of him. O for a camera! ... could have done with programme notes about the music, not just the performers.
Life of Pi -- Yann Martel

Our encounters always leave me weary of the glum contentment that characterises my life. What were those words he used that struck me? Ah, yes: 'dry, yeastless factuality', 'the better story'. (p.63)
