Post-Eastercon miscellany
Tuesday, April 10th, 2007 01:01 pm1. Went to look at the Roman amphitheatre in Chester, which prompted me to think about historical fiction that features characters living in the ruins of Roman buildings. I came up with Alice Borchardt's The Silver Wolf, and
swisstone reminded me of Rosemary Sutcliff's Dawn Wind. (Also Coalescent, but I rejected that on grounds of it not being what I meant.) Can anyone recommend others?
2.
ianmcdonald, you were going to send me details of your comprehensive library of Latin-American Baroque, and I was going to recommend Golijov, especially Ainadamar ("You can't go wrong with an opera about Lorca written by an Argentinian Jew": discuss.) I'd also recommend his St Mark Passion if you're feeling flush.
3. Who was I talking to about Dampier and Rose de Freycinet? Answers on a postcard please. I suspect this was shortly before the onset of the Single Transferrable Hangover (Sunday version).
4. I don't seem to have made it to much in the way of Programme (which is not because the programme was lacking, but because I was). What did I miss? What would I have engaged with?
5. Where's my sensawunda? Has anyone seen it?
6. Books acquired: two. The Sum of all Men, by David Farland (because I've been rereading Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar trilogy and it's put me in the mood for BFFTs) and Devices and Desires, by K J Parker (because
fjm reminded me how very good Parker is at world-building without nerdism: and because I really admire the dryness of tone and bleakness of outlook, both rare in BFFTs).
6a. Total expenditure by me on books: £2. (
ladymoonray very kindly bought the Parker book for me.)
7. Shall I carry on posting short story links? Several people expressed an interest ...
8. I won a prize! For my paper doll!
9. I bought a hat! Because
ladymoonray won a prize for her extraordinarily disturbing Easter Bonnet!
10. I'm really glad I don't have to go to werk today. Though am much less exhausted by Driving In My Car (~300 miles each way including Tonbridge) than I'd expected.
11. Four books (Cherryh, Dunnett, Crace, O'Brian) waiting for me when I got home, courtesy of BookMooch. If I enthused at you about it, read more here.
12. I seem to have developed a hangover in the last half-hour, for no apparent reason. Could the owner please reclaim it?
13.
darth_tigger: this one!. O go on ...
14. Apologies to those I didn't catch up with / talk to / ply with pink drink. Though this may be a blessing in disguise. For you, I mean.
15. Modernlife medicine is rubbish.
EDIT: 16. Doctor Who was FAB and po-mo. Yes, I spotted the Twist almost at once. No, the running gag did not irritate me too much.
17. Flies can only see things that move! Which would explain the stunned bluebottle that has just been gobbled down by my cat. Sam darling, I could do without another stomach upset ... have only just finished the laundry from your welcome home ...
18. Unexpected Dave Garnett!
19. Kinder eggs rock! Note to self: need more icons. Mole icon! Ghost icon! Though sadly no Blue Gorilla icon ...
20. Suspect aforementioned hangover came from looking at half-bottle of Creme de Cacao left over from
bugshaw and
major_clanger's Chocolate Party.
