Just off to buy the new Harry Potter (
it's not for me, it's for a friend. Though I get to check that the pages are in the right order first!)
J K Rowling has gone up in my estimation by dint of the following remark (found in rumour-promoting post
here):
"You are writing children's books, you need to be a ruthless killer."
Canary Wharf station was teeming with small, overtired children last night: my train went through at a few minutes before midnight, and I was
drunk sleepy enough not to remember my camera in time to take a picture of the platform indicator, which was showing departures of the Harry Potter Ghost Train.
There were small children in tears on my train, and at first I thought, "How cruel. Their parents are taking them home just before midnight, so they won't be able to buy the book -- what an anti-climax."
Then I realised they were all heading down to the supermarket to buy it at 50% off the RRP.
