'I despise all novels whatever the subject. I am told they promote a weakening of the intellect, moral stupor, morbid curiosity, and tend to encourage infections of the chest and eyes'..

Couldn't have put it better myself ...

One of these days months I shall sit down and revel in Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell myself. It's been top of my to-be-read pile for a long time, but is not a book for the weak and feeble. I wonder if reading it could count as Healthy Exercise?

It's a really difficult book to read on the train, if it's a bit cramped! Enjoying it so far though.

I must read that - the reviews intrigued me. Ther was a review the other day that said it isn't as good as the hype suggests, but is well worth ploughing through.

I just read Shadowmancer, and got really irritated by the whole bloody CS Lewisness of it. If I didn't know he was a vicar, I'd definitely have guessed some sort of raving Christian. The second book seems better, as there's no pious git wandering around.

I also read Piratica by Tanith Lee recently, and thought of you!

Big hardback novels are healthy, as all the lifting is good weight-bearing exercise.
