ANIMATION: Volcano ash empties UK airspace

The animated gif is interesting, not least because it shows how busy UK airspace usually is ... covers 5:50am to 6:45am this morning (timestamp lower right).

Watching #ashtag on Twitter, it looks as though there's an emergency evacuation in that corner of Iceland, due to flooding.

Sunset here obscured, as it frequently is, by clouds. Normal ones.

Yep. The water has flooded the one road that connects one half of the country with the other.

Interestingly enough, what the pilots really fear is sandblasting (ash-blasting) and ash in the engine and not the lack of visibility at all.

You get a phenomenon that I think translates as 'Glacial hiccups' - the lava melts glacier ice and a vast amount of water floods out of the Glacier wiping out everything in its path.

I couldn't get that to work.
Meanwhile nice to see BBC using such up to date pictures to illustrate stories: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8622099.stm just in case we'd forgotten the livery that British Airways used from 1984 till 1997!

Yesterday evening (after 20:00) we could smell sulphur from the ash cloud here in Oslo. :-)

(Hi, we met at Eastercon, in [livejournal.com profile] kjersi's room.) ^_^
