Post-Eastercon miscellany

1. Went to look at the Roman amphitheatre in Chester, which prompted me to think about historical fiction that features characters living in the ruins of Roman buildings. I came up with Alice Borchardt's The Silver Wolf, and [livejournal.com profile] swisstone reminded me of Rosemary Sutcliff's Dawn Wind. (Also Coalescent, but I rejected that on grounds of it not being what I meant.) Can anyone recommend others?

2. [livejournal.com profile] ianmcdonald, you were going to send me details of your comprehensive library of Latin-American Baroque, and I was going to recommend Golijov, especially Ainadamar ("You can't go wrong with an opera about Lorca written by an Argentinian Jew": discuss.) I'd also recommend his St Mark Passion if you're feeling flush.

3. Who was I talking to about Dampier and Rose de Freycinet? Answers on a postcard please. I suspect this was shortly before the onset of the Single Transferrable Hangover (Sunday version).

4. I don't seem to have made it to much in the way of Programme (which is not because the programme was lacking, but because I was). What did I miss? What would I have engaged with?

5. Where's my sensawunda? Has anyone seen it?

6. Books acquired: two. The Sum of all Men, by David Farland (because I've been rereading Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar trilogy and it's put me in the mood for BFFTs) and Devices and Desires, by K J Parker (because [livejournal.com profile] fjm reminded me how very good Parker is at world-building without nerdism: and because I really admire the dryness of tone and bleakness of outlook, both rare in BFFTs).
6a. Total expenditure by me on books: £2. ([livejournal.com profile] ladymoonray very kindly bought the Parker book for me.)

7. Shall I carry on posting short story links? Several people expressed an interest ...

8. I won a prize! For my paper doll!

9. I bought a hat! Because [livejournal.com profile] ladymoonray won a prize for her extraordinarily disturbing Easter Bonnet!

10. I'm really glad I don't have to go to werk today. Though am much less exhausted by Driving In My Car (~300 miles each way including Tonbridge) than I'd expected.

11. Four books (Cherryh, Dunnett, Crace, O'Brian) waiting for me when I got home, courtesy of BookMooch. If I enthused at you about it, read more here.

12. I seem to have developed a hangover in the last half-hour, for no apparent reason. Could the owner please reclaim it?

13. [livejournal.com profile] darth_tigger: this one!. O go on ...

14. Apologies to those I didn't catch up with / talk to / ply with pink drink. Though this may be a blessing in disguise. For you, I mean.

15. Modern life medicine is rubbish.

EDIT: 16. Doctor Who was FAB and po-mo. Yes, I spotted the Twist almost at once. No, the running gag did not irritate me too much.

17. Flies can only see things that move! Which would explain the stunned bluebottle that has just been gobbled down by my cat. Sam darling, I could do without another stomach upset ... have only just finished the laundry from your welcome home ...

18. Unexpected Dave Garnett!

19. Kinder eggs rock! Note to self: need more icons. Mole icon! Ghost icon! Though sadly no Blue Gorilla icon ...

20. Suspect aforementioned hangover came from looking at half-bottle of Creme de Cacao left over from [livejournal.com profile] bugshaw and [livejournal.com profile] major_clanger's Chocolate Party.

If you make an icon out of that mole, I shall be forced to de-friend you :)

7. Yes please keep up the story postings. Haven't read them all yet but some great stuff there. Thanks.

Nice to see you shame it was only in passing this weekend.

PLEASE keep posting the short story links!

I'm not sure you made it to "Sex in Zero G" which you would have enjoyed. However, you prevented me from going to "I haven't an SF-ing clue" by getting me talking to Enid who gave us sage advice on how our Operatic Society should handle interaction with local government - e.g. re public liability insurance - and we generally talked drunkenly about Amdram stuff with her and [profile] ianmcdonald instead, which was great fun.

I apologise for the hangover - it may be mine as I seem to have drunk vast quantities of red wine without having to pay the consequences.

Excellent to see you again in person (have I already said that?)

yes I shall and yes you did, somewhere down the third or maybe fourth brandy. Unexpected Garnett indeed!

13. I've given it to [livejournal.com profile] pingopark, as I think she sees you more than once every three years! She's happy for you to contact her to let her know when you'll next be in the same place so she can bring it along (I can supply her email if you don't have it).

you are a sweetie -- thank you very much!

[identity profile] darth-tigger.livejournal.com 2007-04-12 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You're a sweetie for lending it to me - I'm just crap for hanging on to it for so long and forgetting to return it!

[identity profile] tamaranth.livejournal.com 2007-04-17 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Can you drop me an email (tamaranth at livejournal) with her email, please? I thought I had it, but no ...
